Blue v3

Decided it was about time I shared the latest version of my Blue deck in Rivals.

Yes I know the others in my play group will now know what the agenda is. And yes Diego will be going “I knew it. I was right” along with “he went with my suggestion”.

But I need to record the deck before I possibly go on and tinker with it.

Thoughts

So I did the pivot from Rituals to Wraiths. Which I am happier about. Although I still have Rituals in the deck. But these are mainly defensive or aiding in getting the wraiths.

I’m not convinced the lovely Annika is the right leader now. But not sure who’d be better. Her advantage is her bp and this deck needs a hard to kill vampire in the haven. I technically don’t need to splash any other clan in this deck. But Lorenzo does have that handy heal ability.

Still think this deck can be tweaked further. But need to spend some time thinking about it. Who knows there may be some must add cards in the next expansion The Dragon & The Rogue. I’m hoping for at least a good reaction card I can splash!

Vampire Thursday! Battle for OP Kit 1.1

Last night saw three of us compete for the playmat from the first organised play kit of season 1, plus a promo Freddy Usher vampire card.

For this “tournament” we used the new Prague City Deck from the Heart of Europe expansion.

We were using the tournament rules scoring for our games (see below).

Scoring from VtM Tournament Rules

The winner would be the player with the highest score at the end of the evening.

I know Diego and myself were playing our own created decks. I think Marcin said he was also using a deck he created.

Below are our chosen leaders for the evening.

Our leaders for the evening

Our first player was chosen randomly using the bgstat at the start of each game. Naturally for the first game we would also be placing our “Haven, starting vampire (Leader), and Agenda face down. Only after each player has placed these 3 cards are all starting vampires and Havens revealed. Agendas remain face down until a player chooses to flip theirs face up.” VtM Tournament Rules

Game 1

Rivalries: Diego was mine, Marcin was Diego’s, and I was Marcin’s.

Wow the City deck was so mean this first game.

After two rounds all four of the Second Inquisition Team-X Operatives were out in the street. That’s two aggregated damage, discarding a card , plus! losing a prestige point each turn.

Not only that but hardly any mortals, vagrants or citizens came out. It was event after event!

We were finding it hard to build up cards in our hands, and thus options on our turns.

Sometimes this sort of thing happens in games like this. You just don’t draw the cards you need. In our case it was the City deck doing its worst. It could easily have been not drawing the cards we needed from our libraries (as well).

You just have to accept this sort of thing happens. Get through the game, and cling on to the hope that the cards will be kinder next game. Although sometimes the cards do really hate you and don’t improve.

Whilst both Diego and Marcin had revealed their agenda cards I hadn’t. Mine was a mystery to them. Although Diego suspected he knew what it was.

This was a slow game thanks to the mean street.

No mortals or citizens meant I wasn’t burning them and able to create wraiths. The couple that did appear got turned into retainers by the other two.

I wasn’t hitting my mill cards.

I had plenty of prestige thanks to the couple of high blood potency valued cards in Diego’s library. So I was in a good place on that front.

Eventually after the constant Second Inquisition battering we were taking Diego was able to deliver a knock out blow to Marcin’s only remaining vampire and get the win.

I never revealed my agenda. The mystery carried over into our next game.

Game 2

Rivalries: Marcin was mine, I was Diego’s, and Diego was Marcin’s.

This was a much quicker game.

Diego had a good start from the off. The street was a bit kinder to us.

I was able to create a wraith on my leader. But thanks to Diego that didn’t last long to have any effect.

But in reality I wasn’t able to get my pieces into place to put my game plan into action. Diego wasn’t allowing me the time.

Marcin wasn’t able to stop Diego delivering the knockout blow to me.

It was back to back wins for Diego and a commanding lead.

I still hadn’t revealed my agenda in this game.

Game 3

Rivalries: Marcin was mine, I was Diego’s, and Diego was Marcin’s.

This game took much longer to play than the previous one.

I needed to slow Diego down. So some of my early turns involved playing cards that in reality should have been played on my rival. But they had the desired effect.

We did get an early Second Inquisition that was joined by a second. But Diego took one out. Otherwise the street was fairly kind.

There was even a nice number of mortal and citizens building up in the burn pile.

Mid game Marcin had Diego on the ropes. Barely holding on. Victory was looking imminent for him. My earlier actions to slow Diego down had been too effective!

I needed to intervene.

Ok what I did was something I was going to be doing eventually. It just had to be sooner than I wanted. I had wanted to play a ritual or two to take advantage of the pile of bodies in the burn pile, and increase my havens secrecy. But keeping Diego alive was more important.

My intervention emptied Marcin’s hand of cards, stopped him playing particular cards. Just making it harder for him to attack Diego, and if he did so not do lots of damage.

It worked.

Diego was able to hang on in there, stabilise and build up again.

Whilst Diego and Marcin traded blows, my mill plan kicked in on Marcin.

I had a handful of cards. Lots of options.

Diego was going in for the kill on Marcin.

Luckily pointing out that Diego’s attacking party wasn’t as boosted as he had hoped meant Marcin’s last vampire survived by a single blood.

Which is how that surviving vampire was left at the end of Marcin’s turn after the Second Inquisition had done their one point of aggregated damage.

Being the opportunist I am I had a chance to grab victory by a knock out! I know, not my battle plan. But still never look a gift horse in the mouth. And it would have been rude not to take advantage of Diego’s hard work.

So in a rare move for me I moved into the street and did a mental attack on Marcin’s vampire to deliver the knock out blow, and grab victory.

Guess what? I still hadn’t revealed my agenda.

At the end of the evening and three games, once all the dust had settled, points tallied up, the victor and winner of the OP Kit 1.1 Playmat was Diego. However with there only being three of us we all got a promo Freddy Usher vampire card.

Final scores per game, agenda points in brackets

This was a fun evening of playing Rivals. I think we had everything you could see in an evening.

I’m looking forward to our next chance to play.

Blue Updated

Wednesday morning saw me visiting Diego’s Pad once again to play VtM Rivals.

It was a chance to try out the changes I made to my blue deck. Diego was also trying out his first built Rivals deck.

Below are our two leaders for the mornings games.

Our leaders

Our first game was a victory for Diego by knocking out my last vampire in my coterie. I’d shuffled my deck too well and wasn’t hitting the newly added reaction cards. Or when I did it was too late. I also remember running dangerously low on my prestige in this game too. Which meant I also wasn’t hitting any of my prestige generating cards.

Game two ended in an agenda points win for Diego.

Something I was unable to stop.

In this game I failed to control the streets, so there was a build up of citizens and vagrants.

The game did last a lot longer. The control side was working really well. The reaction cards were impactful.

I did mill Diego! And for a couple of rounds had Diego down to zero or one card in hand. Having two copies of mental block out meant a lot of pain for Diego.

I’m happier the deck is working a lot better.

Ok here is the bit folks really want to see, the new deck list.

Thoughts

So approximately a third of the deck are reaction cards! That’s a pretty big commitment.

With me milling Diego in game two I want to try this deck with the Disheveled Shelves agenda.

I’m also thinking maybe cutting back the rituals and adding in the wraith cards!

I still need rituals to increase the havens secrecy. But I’m not really getting the opportunity or deciding to play them. Which means the vampire slots might be open to consideration also.

Playing “blue” in Rivals!

August has started off with some games of Vampire the Masquerade Rivals.

Last night was a Vampire Wednesday session where Shane, Marcin, and myself saw our clans battling it out for control of Prague.

Then this morning it was Diego’s turn to try his luck winning control of Prague.

From the above you may have gathered we were playing with the new city deck that comes in the latest expansion Heart of Europe.

For both sessions I was testing my first attempt at building a deck for the game.

It was good that I got a multiplayer game in with it. Plus a head to head. I was able to see how it played in both circumstances. A deck will sometimes be more suited to one format over another.

But before I talk more about my deck let’s briefly look at the games and new city deck.

First up below are the leaders and rivalries for the Vampire Wednesday session. It was the same for both games played.

How the rivalries played out at the Vampire Wednesday session

This was a session where both players teamed up against me!

What can I say? I guess neither Marcin or Shane have played MtG, especially against a blue player.

They did not like it that I was attaching cards to their characters, or stopping them playing cards.

Naturally the way my initial draft of the deck is constructed I didn’t have much in my tool box to stop attacks. Plus I forgot to burn vagrants and citizens in the street when I used my leaders ability.

Leaders from this mornings games with Diego

The new Prague City deck was renamed the deck of doom. The new Second Inquisition cards are nasty. They stack! Ignore secrecy! Do damage and discard cards based on number in the stack!

The new citizens and vagrants are colourful and paint a seedy side to Prague. Plus a bit more tougher to remove.

The new Prince of the City title gives two agenda points when attached to a character. So less impactful than the previous one that gave an agenda point plus prestige at the start of each of your turns. You don’t feel pressured to attack the Prince to stop that gradual accumulation of agenda points.

I like the new City deck. It feels fresh.

Obviously I could have made changes to my deck before playing with Diego. But I didn’t. I wanted to see how it did in a head to head game.

It did it’s thing. But the same weaknesses I identified last night were also an issue in this format.

Game results for both sessions

My first deck

Let’s now look at my first ever Rivals deck and the thinking/inspiration behind it.

When I was sleeving the Shadows and Shrouds expansion cards I came across the card Mental Block. I wanted this in the Hecata deck. Then it got me thinking. This is a very blue card.

The inspiration for this deck

I have been known to splash blue in a deck.

I wondered if it was possible to make a blue archetype deck in Rivals? Are there enough cards to make it viable?

I used the Hecata precon as my starting point.

I stripped out the cards to do with wraiths. They didn’t fit in with the game plan.

I wanted vampires in torpor, getting the torpor ability value from them each round plus clock up the agenda points.

But at the same time I needed to protect my haven and leader. The plan to do this was to control my foes/rival. Whether thats from forcing them to discard cards, stopping them playing cards, removing mortals/citizens from the streets, or giving them curses.

All blue like things to do.

I also needed to generate prestige somehow so there are ways to do that.

I have card draw options in the deck and a way to increase the secrecy of my haven. Enabling me to try find solutions, and make it harder to attack vampires in the haven.

This is a passive deck. It’s not meant to be aggressive. It’s meant to control.

Here is my first attempt at a deck in Rivals which I call…

Blue

My leader, haven, and agenda
  • Agenda – Death is Only the Beginning
  • Haven – Eternal Life Mortuary
  • Leader – Annika (Hecata)

Vampire Deck

  • Faith Gray (Tremere)
  • Lorenzo Murik (Tremere)
  • Anjali the Samedi (Hecata)
  • Bianca Giovanni (Hecata)
  • Kristin (Hecata)
  • Nathaniel (Hecata)

Library Deck

  • Soul Crushing (Attack)
  • Second Tradition: The Domain (Action Ongoing)
  • Sleep of the Damned (Ritual) x 2
  • The Shakedown (Action) x 3
  • Clairvoyance (Action) x 2
  • Blood Makes Noise (Ritual)
  • Utter Darkness (Attack)
  • Interrogation (Attack)
  • Truth of Blood (Ritual)
  • Mental Block (Unhosted Action Ongoing) x 3
  • Psychic Assault (Attack) x 2
  • Tenebrous Avatar (Reaction)
  • Fortify the Inner Facade (Reaction) x 3
  • Defense of the Sacred Haven (Ritual) x 2
  • Grave Robbing (Action) x 3
  • Early Grave (Action) x 2
  • Seek Knowledge (Ritual) x 2
  • Fourth Tradition: The Accounting (Action) x 3
  • Flesh of Marble (Reaction Special) x 2
  • Spirit’s Touch (Action) x 2
  • It’s Your Funeral (Attack) x 2

I need to replace the Attack cards with more Reaction cards. They are dead cards in the deck.

Do I have the correct number of copies of each card? Not sure that will be the tweak after I add in the reaction cards.

I’ll close with this Rivals agenda which has me thinking about a second deck!

Does this make mill a viable deck archetype?

A thought on the Hecata Deck

Yesterday the planets finally aligned so Diego and I were able to get the latest Vampire the Masquerade Rivals expansion Shadows and Shrouds to the table.

I was so glad we were able to do this. I have plans to build my first Rivals deck around Hecata and their torpor shenanigans.

But before I do that I really needed to play the precon deck as it comes in the expansion. Get an idea of how the clan plays, what sort of tricks they have up their sleeve.

Remember these two games were two player. So where the deck might be “weak” in a head to head game, it might be stronger when played in a three or four player game.

I went with Annika as my leader in the first game. If my memory doesn’t fail me the advice for new players playing the core precon decks is to use the six cost blood potency vampire as the leader. So that’s the advice I went with for my first play of the Hecata deck.

Now I will state for the record I had no idea what cards were in the library deck. I was playing blind!

All I knew going into these games was the Hecata deck made use of the new wraith mechanic. More on that later. Plus you wanted vampires in torpor.

Looking at Annika’s ability I was assuming there were going to be a few rituals in the deck.

However during our first game I spent more than an action or two drawing cards, or playing action cards such as Grave Robbing to draw cards hoping to get a ritual. I didn’t draw a single one.

An inspection of the deck revealed it had five ritual cards out of the forty that make up the library.

Our leaders for the two games

With two other vampires (Nathaniel and Bianca Giovanni) interacting with rituals in some way. You start to get the impression that having rituals out is an important part of the deck. Although there are a couple of action cards that do things with rituals that seem token gestures to that plan.

So I would expect to be hitting rituals a bit more reliably than I was. Especially when one of them (Summon Spirit) is one of the very few ways for a player to make wraiths in the deck.

I didn’t make any wraiths in this game. Although I did use the leader ability to burn the odd mortal in the street.

I lost the game due to having no more vampires left in my coterie. I’d spent too much time looking for rituals and making sure I had vampires in torpor. Leaving myself open to having pretty weak vampires left in my coterie that could be easily taken out.

For our second I changed my leader to Zahara.

I still didn’t hit a ritual until late in the game.

Although I did get Zahara cycling through torpor nicely to generate wraiths. The Haven Eternal Life Mortuary’s Leader Ability was really handy for doing this. A nice little synergy.

Agendas and Havens for the two games

Diego won with an agenda points victory.

In all the Hecata precon has three strategies it uses. Although thematic, I think it could have been more focused on say just two of them.

Having vampires in torpor with the torpor ability is cool. Getting extra value from them during the torpor/mend step is nice. At the moment it’s just a matter of building decks around the current torpor abilities. So I see decks that splash the odd Hecata vampire to supplement their main strategy.

Wraiths are an interesting addition. I’d like more ways to create them. But having a combo of cards that burn mortals, do something based on number of burned mortals, and create wraiths, the amount of initial cards is probably about right. Plus I like how this mechanic now makes burning a mortal by another player a harder decision for that player. They may need to heal badly, but do they really want to fuel these cards?

I’d also like to see more wraith abilities. At the moment they boost the stats of the vampire they are attached to. I’d like to see some that punish the attacking player. But the surprise element is cool.

To be fair to the deck with the number of action cards for combat I don’t think I was aggressive enough with the deck. I did like the reaction cards like Flesh of Marble that increase the defense of the vampire and change aggregated damage to physical damage.

I need to look at the other cards available but I think we might be seeing the start of a “blue” control style deck in Rivals. Spirit’s Touch interacting with another players library, or Clairvoyance looking at their hand. Mental Block looks fun and stops a player playing a card from their deck. All “blue” type things to do to another player. And I have been known to play blue type decks in the past.

Overall a fun deck, just not overly suitable for the two player head to head format.

A VtM Rivals Deckbuilder #2

Between work and Portal coming to the Switch (see my “the cake is a lie” posts) I’ve not had much chance to work on this project.

However I found a little time yesterday to look at my first hurdle in getting to that sweet sweet card data, getting passed the login screen.

My Python code

The main problem with the login was extracting the hidden token from the page to pass into the login payload.

I know the login is working because I get the “<Response [200]>”. Which means it has been successful.

However when I try and get the database page all I get is the login page back. So now that’s my next hurdle. I’ve logged in, now to get the database page back. Oh and I need to get rid of those two warnings. They may not solve the problem I have but getting rid of them won’t hurt.

See you on the next post when I have something to report.

A VtM Rivals Deckbuilder #1

Temptation got the better of me. Well for the moment.

Let’s face it the odds of this being completed are low. There is a lot working against it. One of the main forces working against it is that I start nights for the next two and a half weeks. Basically my shift is 8pm to 5am. This starts tonight.

In the meantime let’s pretend I’m doing stuff.

So before you start building a deckbuilding app of any kind you need a card database. I know it seems obvious, but still.

There are a handful of options of getting one.

  • An official source – yep I could approach Renegade and ask them if they’d let me have the data. Not very likely, plus there might be a lot of legal paper stuff to sign.
  • Find a third party source – not a reliable option. You just don’t know how accurate it is. Plus it may not be all the cards available.
  • Enter it manual myself! Life is too short for this.
  • Web scrape the data from the Renegade website. This is the option I’ll be going with.

This morning having given in to temptation I started looking at scraping the data I need from the Renegade website.

I’m actually writing this deckbuilder using Pythonista on an iPad. So that’s Python 3.6 and the libraries that come with it. Which is a more limited set than available on a more open platform.

To scrape the data I’m going to be using the requests library.

Which means I have a steep little learning curve to do, along with refreshing my Python. It’s not as if I use this stuff daily, especially web scraping using the requests library.

The first hurdle to overcome before I can get to scraping the data I need is getting passed the login screen. To be able to get to the deckbuilding page you have to be logged in.

So that’s my first bit of focused Python and requests learning.

More soon (hopefully).

Rivals Needs To Be At UKGE 2023

This morning after having had my first cup of coffee of the day I decided it was a good idea to plant the idea of Renegade doing something with Rivals at UKGE in 2023.

After all UKGE this year is (or will be after GenCon and Essen have happened) the third largest boardgame convention in the world. Usually it’s third or fourth depending when you look at the numbers. It’s competitor for those spots is Origins. Which fell into fourth place this year.

At this years UKGE there was nothing done with Rivals at the show. A missed opportunity for sure.

I’m hoping that with enough time they have time to organise a tournament like a Prince of the City at the show.

It seems incredibly silly that Renegade didn’t do something at such a large show. A big missed opportunity. But I can understand why considering recent world events, and event organiser policy on covid. The fact that they could repeat this missed opportunity next year doesn’t bear thinking of.

Why do I need to know now if they will be doing something?

I enjoy my mini holidays attending UKGE. Spending three days there, catching talks, more time to do stuff like take part in tournaments (which I have done in the past), some gaming in the evenings.

But to be able to do this and have it affordable you have to book well in advance to get the cheap hotel rates.

If I miss the window of opportunity on the cheap rates it becomes harder to justify a multi day visit to the show. In fact in these very tough economic times nigh on impossible. Even with the cheap rates it’s still a tough decision.

Most tournaments take place over a couple of days at these big shows. So you need accommodation.

Even if it was a single day event the decision to enter is not easy. Having paid to get into the show you want time to look around and do stuff, as well as take part in the event. Sadly the event stops that.

If you are going for a day you have to decide which of the two things you are going to do. You can’t really do both.

That’s why I need to know now. My show planning has started now with deciding if I’m going for multiple days and if so getting that affordable hotel rate.

A saga and a half

It’s been one of those weeks.

It started last Sunday when not one of a dozen eggs I was given survived the journey home.

That set the tone for the week.

I’ve changed shift patterns at work and also one of my days off to cover people being off on holiday or training. Which has meant I’ve had to move a planned game of Tapestry twice as my stint on the new shift got extended after changing the initial date.

Then I nearly lost a work pda. Which if I had done would have been embarrassing and also just the icing on the cake.

But last night after work Diego made my week.

I’ve not moaned about it on here. But getting my pre-order copy of the latest Vampire the Masquerade Rivals expansion Shadows and Shrouds with the promo alt art cards has been an epic tale that is still on going.

Way back when Renegade opened the pre-orders for it I ordered two copies. One for me and the other for Diego.

The idea is that we get these cool promo alt art cards of a couple of the new vampires, plus the expansion itself a week it so before it hits the shops.

It didn’t happen that way for this expansion.

Retailers had their copies and were selling them two weeks before the Renegade UK Warehouse were rush sending out the UK pre-orders. The rush was on so that apparently UK players would have their copies before the first ever Prince of the City event in the UK.

Some didn’t. I was one of them.

But let me say this before continuing that this expansion should never have been legal for the UK Prince of the City event. It put those that had pre-ordered their copy from Renegade at a disadvantage to those that got theirs from a retailer.

After two weeks my pre-order still hadn’t shown up, and Renegade marketing head honcho Matt Holland got involved and started chasing things up on my behalf.

The UK Warehouse then “resent” my order. Although I suspect it was never sent in the first place. I’d had no shipping notice. And they never provided a shipping number to trace it.

However what arrived was only half of the pre-order. A single copy of the expansion and promo cards.

Really?

Naturally this had to go to Diego. It was the right thing to do.

Matt chased it up. They were meant to have sent the missing expansion. But the tracking number they gave was for the one that had already arrived!

This was followed by a wall of silence from the UK Warehouse. Who I honestly don’t know how they are still employed. Their incompetence, not answering emails, etc would see them going through disciplinary processes and seeking new employment in most other places.

The whole saga is about to go into its eighth week. Allegedly the UK Warehouse has sent/will be sending the missing half of the pre-order any day now. Nada on the shipping notice front.

I suspect the UK Warehouse is once again blowing smoke up Matt’s bum (to use a colourful expression).

However Diego surprised me yesterday by giving me a copy of the new expansion.

I was gobsmacked by his generosity and kindness. My eyes nearly leaked.

It really did make my day, and end a week where if it could go wrong it would, on a high.

What will I do with my pre-order copy when it eventually comes?

Obviously I don’t need two copies. So I’ll use it as extra prize support for our organised play.

In the meantime I have a deck to build!

A 4 Player Vampire Wednesday!

Last night saw Diego and myself play our first four player game of Vampire the Masquerade Rivals.

Before then we had only played head to head (in other words two player) and three player games.

But this game was a first for Shane and Marcin also. It was the first time they were playing the game. Noobs in other words. Or to remain on theme, fresh blood!

Whilst waiting for Marcin to arrive we went over the rules for playing the game with Shane. Or the most relevant ones to get started. Some you can avoid until they crop up, like schemes. Otherwise it’s rules overload. And it probably felt like that anyway.

The three of us then “played” a couple of rounds with Diego and myself explaining what we were doing as we played. It was during this learning play Marcin arrived.

We had already given Shane Brujah to play for the evening. It’s probably the easiest of the four core set clans to play. We had also planned for Diego’s copy of Brujah to be played by Marcin, with the added house rule suspending the unique vampire rule for the evening. However Marcin felt the call of Toreador.

We drew for our rivals which saw Shane and myself drawing each other’s token. Which basically left Diego and Marcin each other’s rivals.

Our Vampire Clans and Rivalries

I needed to be drawing rituals and finding Sonja Valentine. But my deck seemed to be working against me on that front. I only started drawing rituals late in the game. Too late to be any use to me. My leader was in torpor mending. So I had no blood to use that would hurt my rival. My three vampires I did have out were dangerously low on blood. I had three prestige left. They were dead cards at the point they showed up.

For a couple of rounds it wasn’t in anyones interest to attack my three weak vampires. If Diego or Marcin did they left it open for Shane to grab the win. If Shane did he left it open for Marcin to grab the points win (at that point in time Marcin was in the lead with five agenda points). To make the situation worse we had three S.A.D. Agents in the Street.

Before Diego grabbed the points victory by leap frogging Marcin with six agenda points, and knocking out Shane. It was getting to the point of I could have won on my turn. Shane was on a single prestige. He only needed one of his vampires to die (it’s how Diego triggered the end of the game). S.A.D. would have weakened his remaining vampires more than enough to make sure which ever one I attacked they would have gone down.

I liked that last bit of the game. Anyone of us could have potentially grabbed a win. Sadly Diego did!

My only agenda point for the evening was from putting Shane’s leader into torpor.

Although Shane is shown as zero points below. Which is correct. He was knocked out by Diego, so any agenda points he had don’t count. However if in a tournament I believe we would still record Shane’s three agenda points as they are used in rankings or something like that.

Final scores

Still a fun evening playing a great card game with some great people.
