The Road to UKGE 2024

The holiday request at work has been approved.

So my plan is to travel to the Birmingham area on the Thursday and get to whatever accommodation or campsite I’ve booked. Have a relaxed, chill evening.

Then the day of the expo itself have a relaxed not so early start to the day. If I was traveling on the day of the expo (which I have done before) I’d be having to get up damn early. It most definitely wouldn’t be as relaxed a start as traveling across the day before.

I’m still waiting for Nathan to get back to me about coming along.

On the Fenland Gamers front I’ve created the event for the expo with those club members there on the Saturday to have a group picture taken. It’s bit of a club tradition.

But next week I’ll be booking my accommodation for the expo.

Brief Expo Update – 12Mar24

The holiday request has gone in at work for the expo dates (Fri 31 May – 2 Jun) plus a couple days after to give mum time to recover.

My trips away are always draining for mum. Apparently the two attack chihuahuas (the deadly breed) Nico and Loki can be little sods, and play her up something rotten.

So I need to factor this in for any trip away that is not a day trip.

I’ve also asked Nathan if he wants to come. He needs to check dates as it might clash with dog sitting duties for his mum.

So hopefully next week I’ll be sharing that I have the time off, Nathan is going, and hotels are booked.

Happy Mario and Mothers Day 2024

Happy Mario Day everyone! And to all the mums out there happy Mother’s Day.

This year Mario Day and Mother’s Day in the UK coincide.

A double celebration.

That’s why as I write this post I’m watching the Super Mario Bros movie.

Mum has got the perfunctory card. But I did get her a cake (photo to be shared on social media later) and a bunch of tulips.

Plus from mum and me some daffodils to put next to nans ashes. They were her favourites.

Oh and mum gets to spend even more time with her favourite two little masters of mayhem as I’m working this evening until 2am. So I’m going to get stories of how they kept her awake all night tomorrow.

Happy Mario and Mother’s Day…

It would appear once more I am leaving the booking of accommodation for UKGE to the last minute.

I can’t book the days off until the start of April!

At which point I need to sort something out booking wise. But any affordable rooms will be long gone. Even if it was earlier there seems to be less and less affordable rooms each year. Are the hotels etc finally catching on to the popularity of the expo, and exploiting that new knowledge?

I am toying with the idea of camping instead of a hotel. It’s been years now since I’ve spent a night under canvas.

I know in previous years some attendees of the expo have used a camp site. And it does just fall into the affordable price range.

Camping at UKGE was added to my bucket list for the expo of things to do years ago when I first heard of this being a thing.

Plus it would give me an excuse to update some of my equipment. I am tempted by the Kelly Kettle for instance. There are three versions! Even though my initial use would be for camping I’d want to be able to use it on backpacking trips also. So out of the three available “models” I’d go with the Trek version.

I already have an army surplus 100% wool blanket in the car, along with a poncho liner. Yes to be totally honest these have been recent additions. Which is the start of a sleep system idea I have. I think these would work well with the backpacking quilt I have. Obviously not the lightest of systems but definitely warmer and more flexible. Plus as a car camping system as it initially would be used the weight side would not matter. Nor would the fact it is more bulky.

But this conversation should be for another post if I decide to go this route for UKGE.

Having raised the topic of camping and backpacking on what is now essentially a boardgaming blog. I have given mum notice that later in the year I will be returning to the hills for one or two trips. Which means on one or two of future posts this blog will return back to its roots.

Yes although the posts are no longer on this blog (they are archived on a backup) this blog started life back in 2008 as an outdoors/backpacking blog!

But life events meant I have had to take an extended break from doing that sort of thing. Over a decade now. I really do love backpacking and hiking in the remote areas of the UK. And I think it’s about time I rekindled that love of being outdoors.

The aim is to get a couple of weekend trips to the hills in over the summer. It will be a while before I’m back to applying for the TGOC. Which I really do want to take part in again. But being a carer puts restrictions on how long I can be away. Three days is the limit at the moment. Two weeks is out of the question.

As some of you know I have reached an age where in the UK if I have a personal pension I can start taking it. I’m at least a decade away from being able to take the state pension. Well currently. The UK Government like to keep moving the goal posts so it gets further and further away.

But what this means is that I have as an option the possibility of taking a short career break of about 5 months.

Which is an idea I’m mulling over.

It would allow me to get some stuff sorted for mum. Do the afore mentioned backpacking trips and spend a bit more time with Nathan. Maybe even volunteer sometime to a charity.

I never thought I’d be able to do something like this. So now I know it’s an option I think it needs exploring and looking into the feasibility.

The 2023 UKGE Experience

And that’s a wrap.

Yep another UKGE done and dusted.

So how was it for the first real expo for me since we came out of lockdowns and other restrictions?

Well it was busy. Very busy.

Which the official provisional figures show (see tweet from yesterday below). With the 32k unique attendees, we are seeing approximately a 10k increase in unique attendees over 2022. Which doing some quick mental maths and just plucking a number out of midair, gives us somewhere in the area of a 45% increase. Not a bad guess as the calculator has told me it is in-fact 43.5%.

Before I go on about the expo itself I have a story about the hotel to regale you with. I should warn you this post is going to jump all around the timeline like a badly written lost Back to the Future script.

The Hotel Saga

Let’s jump back in time to last Thursday morning when Jonathan called The Saltley Inn to confirm his booking. Whilst on the phone with the Saltley Inn he kindly also checked on the bookings for the rest of us also planning to stay there.

It turns out there had been an error in my booking and I was only booked in on the Friday night, and not the Saturday as well.

This was no good to me I was planning on being at the show all three days. I’d paid for three days parking at the NEC. What bloody good was one night to me?

So I tried to cancel the booking with the plan of driving to the expo each day.

Sadly the Saltley Inn wouldn’t let me cancel for free (they saw it as my error that should have been picked up back in January when I booked, they have a point). So I said if I was going to pay for the room anyway that I would not be cancelling.

I’m going to jump now to Friday evening and arriving at the Saltley Inn. I’ll talk more about Friday at the expo once this tale is over.

I arrive at the address of the Saltley Inn. It’s not obvious where the hotels parking is, so I park on side street next to the Inn.

Inside I approach the woman behind the bar to check in.

All I can tell you about the next few moments as I was checked in is that this was a very uncomfortable experience where I was most definitely made to feel like an inconvenience.

Oh and a heads up the Saltley Inn requires photo id to check you in. A fact not mentioned on the Inns Booking.com description. It was lucky that I had some with me.

I did ask about the hotel parking and was told about a blue gate on the side street to go through. If only there had been a sign of some sort identifying it as belonging to the hotel and their parking. At best without being blocked in there was space for three cars. Hardly adequate for a twenty room inn.

My room for a double was small. There was no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. So how was I to make a hot drink if I wanted one, especially in the morning when I woke up?

I definitely had to draw the blinds to the room considering that the first floor bedrooms of the terraced houses on the street next to the inn looked directly into the room. Being able to draw the blinds was a fluff that involved climbing on the bed, and reaching up to the cord mechanism that was three quarters of the way up the window. I think it is fair to say not easy to get to.

Not long after being “settled” in my room I needed to make use of the en-suite facilities. There was not much toilet paper on the holder, and no sign of a spare roll anywhere in the room. Even worse was were they had put the toilet roll holder. Not to one side within easy reach. Nope it was directly behind you above the cistern.

There was no free Wi-Fi, or hotel Wi-Fi (as you can pay for at a Travelodge). No if you wanted Wi-Fi so you weren’t burning through your data plan then you could pay the extortionate BT Wi-Fi fees. Not an ideal solution at all.

I was beginning to think that I had had a lucky escape not having to spend a second night in this over priced unwelcoming inn.

Once Charlene and her family had arrived and got settled in I met up with them to see if it was just me that the bar staff/receptionist had an issue with. It turns out their experience of checking in was similar to mine. It wasn’t just me. It was the grump behind the counter.

Charlene also dropped the breakfast bomb as well. If we wanted breakfast at the inn then that was only served after 9am! Was the Booking.com description just a work of fiction.

What hurt even more was Charlene was paying half what I was for her double room! and I booked earlier!!

Hold on folks we are now going to jump forward to Saturday morning.

I had plans for the expo which meant I needed to be there by 8am. So I was up, showered, packed, and ready to hit the road by 7am.

Guess what the Saltley Inn doesn’t have at that time of the morning? Any staff. The bar is locked up securely. So I ended up putting my room key through their letter box, and messaging them that I had done that. Good job I didn’t need toilet paper.

And that is the end of my bad experience at The Saltley Inn. A place I intend to never return to.

No for our next time jump…

A bloody early start

It’s dawn, five am to be precise. A little chill in the air for the Friday morning. But I had a plan. I needed to be on the road by five thirty.

I wanted to be at the NEC by eight at the latest.

After filling up at the local Tesco, and finding out their cash machine was out of order (are any cash machines in Wisbech working at the moment?) I was on the A47 and heading towards Peterborough.

At Eye I pulled into McDonalds and got my standard breakfast order Double Sausage Egg McMuffin Meal with a latte., and was back on the road.

An hour and a half later I was at the NEC pulling into the East 1 car park.

After a gentle relaxed stroll from the car park to the expo I was in a small queue outside Hall 3 waiting for them to allow folks to buy/collect their tickets for the expo.

I decided I’d cut my losses and just do two days this year and head on back late Saturday afternoon.

At 9am as the Hall 1 doors opened I made straight to the shop and drop to get a box for the day (best £3 you will spend at the expo folks).

After a wonder round Hall 1 I was just about to make my way up the stairs to look round Hall 2 when I saw Ben coming down the stairs.

Don’t tell Ben this but I did rather enjoy spending time with him at the show.

Later in the morning I bumped into Sarah of Board games in Minutes who I follow and talk to on Twitter. Sarah came all the way from the US to attend the expo. That’s dedication.

However Sarah is so nice and friendly. I didn’t get a chance to play any games with her at the show. However Sarah did tell me about one of the shows hot games After Us. A game that did seem to tick a few boxes for me, such as deck building, theme (Planet of the Apes), art (which looks amazing). Sadly that days allocation had already sold out. I would have to try and get a copy Saturday before that days allocation sold out if I was interested in getting it.

My big purchase of the day was the Alley Cat reprint of Amun-re 20th anniversary edition. They had the deluxe edition and the regular. I went with the deluxe edition. I felt lucky that had copies to sell as it was only just being sent out to backers.

I also managed to meet up with my friend Byron and try his latest prototype currently called Tabletop Skirmish.

I liked the game a lot and shared my thoughts with Byron on the game. I do try and give honest opinions and constructive feed back. So if I said I like it I like it. Can’t wait for the Kickstarter.

I also managed to get a couple of samples of the coffee bags that WotC/Hasbro are offering on their new D&D themed coffee subscription service! Talk about diversifying. I’ll be trying that coffee later in the week.

The nice thing about Friday was I did bump into friends throughout the day. It sounds like I was meeting lots of people, but it was four or five at most.

I think that is the highlight for me of going to the expo.

Are you ready for our next time jump?

Saturday

My breakfast was a subway breakfast roll from a garage on the way from the Saltley Inn to the NEC. I also ended up buying a load of different flavoured Dr Peppers and Fanta to try with Mum when I got home. Hey in my defence these were imported American flavours that we don’t get in our supermarkets.

As I was queuing outside Hall 2 ready to dash and get a copy of After Us I got a message from Marcin. Could I pick up the last copy of the Outlive expansion from Firestorm Games as soon as the doors opened?

I don’t like disappointing friends, but I had got there early to get my hands on a copy of After Us. So I told Marcin I would go there straight after I got my game.

I was at the front of the queue for Hall 2 and still there were people already queuing for After Us before me! How? I call shenanigans.

Ok what was special about After Us? Well it was the UKGE exclusive box cover art that had Big Ben on it, instead of the regular Eiffel Tower art. Plus there was only one stand selling it with a limited supply. It was definitely one of the hottest games at the show.

As I was about to purchase my copy of After Us I saw that they also had the Outlive expansion Marcin wanted. I could kill two birds with one stone. Boy was I happy.

Midday saw those of us from Fenland Gamers at the expo for the day meet up for the traditional group photo.

I briefly bumped into Sarah in the morning. For some-one surviving on so little sleep during the expo she looked in remarkably good shape, and alert. Not sure how much of that was caffeine fuelled. She had purchased a rather stylish gaming bag. It looked very fabulous.

The other game I bought was Trek 12: Himalaya and it’s expansion. It’s a roll and write about climbing in the Himalayas with a “campaign” mode.

I also splashed out on a set of clay gaming chips to use with boardgames. They aren’t cheap but they are top end chips.

By mid afternoon I was getting tired and decided to call it a day for my time at the expo.

It was off home after an enjoyable two days at the expo punctuated by the hotel from hell experience.

Brief update ahead of UKGE

I’ve already said what my plans are for this coming weekends UKGE.

The car parking for the three days has been paid. Saving me a fiver according to the official website. Which is better than nothing and worth doing. Unlike getting your tickets to UKGE in advance which has absolutely zero benefit.

I’m not sure how the attendance for the expo will be effected by the two day train strike starting on the Friday. It will naturally mean some won’t be able to attend. But in any significant numbers? We’ll have to see.

I’ve caught some coverage about the expo online. Sometimes these content creators/social influencers (same thing as far as I can tell) just annoy me with their bad takes, factual errors, etc. In this case it’s not being sure about their facts. At least do some basic research before opening your mouth! And these are the folks the expo organisers court, give press passes to.

But the excitement is building for the weekend. I’m really looking forward to being at the expo.

My 2023 UKGE Plans

We are fastly approaching that time of year when the UK board gamers migrate to the Birmingham NEC for the UK Games Expo.

Unlike last year where I went for just the day. This year I am going for all three days of the show. It’ll be more like two and a half days as I always leave about midday on the Sunday.

I’m hoping whilst there I’ll get a chance to catch up with one or two friends, and also meet one or two new people that I only know from social media.

Games wise I have nothing I want to buy particularly.

If there are some of the map packs for Cartographers I’ll pick them up. I’m hoping the Star Realms d10 life counters are on a stand. And I might find myself buying the 5e version of the One Ring.

Accommodation was booked a while back, and it looks like the Saturday night there will be a small contingent of Fenland Gamers staying there. So an opportunity to do some gaming there in the evening.

I just need to prebook my NEC parking in the next week (it works out cheaper) and I’m debating whether to buy my UKGE ticket before.

Usually there is no benefit from doing so. The ticket isn’t cheaper, you still have to queue.

If you are going and interested in meeting up or just saying hi. Leave a comment below and we’ll arrange something. Or just stop me on the show floor. I’ll be the one looking like a rather sad Santa.

UKGE2023 plans taking shape

Just over a week ago I booked off the week that the UK Games Expo is happening.

So already my mind was turning to plans for attending the third or fourth (depending on when you look at the attendance figures) boardgaming expo/show in the world. It’s definitely the largest in the UK.

I was on course for my usual last minute, left it too late to find cheap accommodation plan.

That was until Jonathan posted on the Fenland Gamers discord server that he had booked his accommodation, and which days he was attending.

Which prompted me to get my act together and also book my accommodation for the three days I’ll be attending.

I’ve booked the same establishment as Jonathan so hopefully we will be able to get some gaming in whilst there.

This will be for me nearly normal attendance resumed for UKGE. It will be all three days. However it won’t be me going up on the Thursday and having that extra nights stay, and a relaxed start to the Friday. Instead it will be a damn early start on the Friday instead.

Anyway I’m sure I’ll write more nearer and at the time. Laters…

UKGE 2022

Yesterday was the first day of the UK Games Expo 2022, and the only day I would be attending out of its three day duration.

Previously pre-pandemic I had attended all three days. But this year I wasn’t able to justify to myself the time and cost of attending all three days. Especially since I had long missed the small window of cheap hotel prices.

The day started real early, nearly up for work early. I was on the road to Birmingham by 5am. Coffee and pain au chocolate providing me with that start of the day kick and nourishment the body needs.

On the road omg it’s early time

I arrived at the NEC parking at 7am. There were some vehicles already there. But the advantage for me was I could park very close to the car park entrance and the exhibition halls themselves.

As I got near to the entrance for halls 1 and 2, next to the lake, was the medieval reenactment camp. Which was nicely framed with the rear end of a helo and aerial trapezium (from the smaller Bear ‘glorified stunt man’ Ghylls Adventure Show).

The aerial trapezium reminded me of my early years in Aldershot, and the one that the paras had to use.

Surprisingly there were already 10 people queuing up waiting for the ticket office to open up.

7:20am and I had been beaten to the front of the ticket queue.

I hadn’t realised the show was opening up earlier this year. The doors were opening to the public at 9am.

So after getting my ticket at about 8am, it was time to start another queue at the top of the stairs! But only after a very quick exchange of cash for a copy of Ghostbusters 2 the boardgame that had been arranged.

It was here that Jonathan finally caught up with me.

After a couple of photos and banter it was time to go in.

There was a great freebie as we entered the show of copies of The Little Book of Battle Maps being given away. I grabbed a couple of copies.

My show purchases on my very limited budget were the following:

  • 5 tile bags
  • A copy of Regicide
  • Sushi Go Party
  • Ghostbusters 2 (a pickup at the show)

The highlights of the day were the encounters I had during the day.

Within minutes of the doors opening I met Brian a friend from the Chatteris Warlords gaming group. Later on I bumped into Dean also from the same gaming group, and MtG opponent.

Then there was the lunchtime Fenland Gamers club photo of those attending the show.

I even met some-one new! I had a great lunchtime chat with iplayred (on Instagram) and her partner.

Otherwise I felt the show was a little flat. Not yet back to its glory of the pre-pandemic days. I know the SUSD folks were at the show, as were the OnTableTop crew (they even had a live streaming booth! Very E3 video game channel like). But there was no Dice Tower crew over, no big boardgame Youtubers. Airecon got the Watch It Played lot over. But UKGE couldn’t get their big names over? Or were OnTableTop and their setup meant to be it?

The Wise Wizard Games demo area had no one from the company there as far as I could see. I think it was just a third party doing it for them.

It almost felt like the American presence was reduced.

I had an enjoyable day. But glad it was just a day I was there for.

UKGE 2022 Plans

Next Friday (Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday), Saturday and Sunday sees the UK Games Expo return to the NEC.

I’m expecting the Friday (the day I plan to be going) to be just as busy as a Saturday usually is, because it’s a bank holiday.

The plan is to pick up the second hand copy of Ghostbusters 2 the board game that I’m buying off another member of the Board Game Trading and Chat UK Facebook group. This was arranged a few weeks ago.

Lunchtime those of us from Fenland Gamers that are at UKGE are meeting up to have a group photo taken. Which I’m sure will be accompanied with banter and talk about our expo experience so far.

There will not be lots of new games bought at the expo. I just don’t have the budget. Having to get four new tyres on the car have stopped anything like that happening. The budget is very very tight. So unless there is an amazing bargain in my very restricted budget range, there will not be one of those “here is my expo game haul” photos.

Who knows maybe I’ll see the attraction of the open gaming at the expo this year!

My take on that UKGE Incident

While I was busy showing people how to play Epic the card game on Friday I missed all the drama happening elsewhere at the expo. Now I don’t intend that to seem like I’m making light of what actually happened. I’m not. But I struggled to find a better word to describe what happened. I feel what ever word I use sounds like it is trivialising what happened. And I don’t want to do that.

On Friday during a RPG session that was being run the GM decided to cross the line and do something I think was totally out of order.

Here is a first hand account as told by a person in the game.

(I grabbed the screen shot above off one of the Facebook posts that shared what happened. Unlike the person that shared it I have removed any way to identify the person involved. What happened is more important than who it happened to.)

Naturally this has been a hot topic of debate and even made the BBC News Website.

Firstly the organisers of the expo need to be applauded for their handling of the incident and quick response. They seem to have done everything right as soon as they were made aware of what happened.

I know they have said they will review things and put stuff in place to avoid this sort of thing happening in the future. However I don’t think that the process they had in place for approving the RPG sessions was at fault. It was obvious that the GM had not included in his submission for the game that this would be happening or hinted to the players before hand either.

So I fail to see how the organisers or any other event could avoid this happening in the future. What you can’t stop is a GM being a total dick and just throwing something just as vile and unacceptable out of nowhere in to the game.

If I need to state it, for the record I think what this GM did was disgusting, unacceptable and I can’t imagine any circumstances (even with real good friends) that this would be appropriate.

What I did find odd, was that some were kind of defending the person online, using the freedom of speech etc defence. You can’t defend this. It doesn’t fall under the freedom of speech.

What I find hard to understand is the mentality of this person. Just what thought process did they have that made them think this was a good idea? I’m baffled.

Single handedly this person has not only harmed those involved in the session, they have bought the hobby into disrepute. I’m hoping after the dust has settled that the person has had time to reflect and see that what they have done is wrong, and made an apology to those involved. But something inside me says that they are finding the attention and coverage fun. I don’t know why I think that. But if the person thought the subject was a good idea, and then enjoyed the aftermath of it. Something tells me that they may not be entirely repentant.

Which is a shame. There are so many positives to the hobby. The last thing it needs is dicks like this ruining it, and destroying those positives.

I hope that those involved get the support they need, and that they hopefully will find peace.
