A Christmas Period Update

There is one last opportunity for some games to be played before the year is over. Hopefully that will work out. Then it’s a couple of boring stats posts and we are in the new year.

I did give away my Pokemon Splendor yesterday. My step sisters son is a Pokémon fan. He collects the cards but doesn’t play. So I decided to let him have my copy of the game.

My Christmas viewing, apart from YouTube has been a rewatch of season 1 of Arrow. Which has been fun watching these earlier, almost darker episodes again.

Diogo update

I’d say Diogo is now 98% back to full use of the leg.

I do notice a brief limp after he has been resting for a while.

Now to build him up to doing a longer walk.

I do have a new brew kit in the works. It will work with any stove. Well 99% of them that aren’t like a Jetboil type stove. It won’t be the lightest but it will be flexible.

Having a brew stop while out on the longer walks is something I really enjoy. It’s something I need to introduce Diogo to. Unlike Dolly who will have a bit more freedom while we stop. Diogo will be on his leash. Until he learns or should I say earns the trust to be off it. Which at the moment won’t be for a while.

I do need to look into training for the both of us. We need to correct Diego’s barking while excited. Whether that’s while I’m getting ready for our walk or while out and seeing another dog.

His barking Christmas Day morning at 8am upon seeing another dog did see a home owner enter into the Christmas spirit by shouting out of their window for Diogo to stop barking. Diogo’s response? To keep barking. It’s surprising how loud his bark sounds in the silence of the early morning, echoing off the surrounding houses.

I’ve tried the usual words in English and Spanish but they have no impact. I’m not sure Diogo knows the meaning or how to be.

So I’m hoping a combination of training and calming dog treats (ordered from Amazon) will break Diogo of this habit.

The other aim of any training is to get to the point where he has earnt the trust to chill freely while stopping for a brew.

Super Slow December

It’s been a long minute since the previous post. It’s either feast or famine on that front it seems.

Gaming has slowed right down. December is historically a slow gaming month. I do find it frustrating.

A brief Diogo update. It’s nearly a month since he joined our family. Somehow Friday afternoon Diogo hurt his back leg, and has not used it since.

I gave him the weekend to show signs of recovery, along with shorter walks to allow him to rest it.

Come yesterday morning the leg was neither improving nor getting worse. So it was a trip to the vets for him. The vet has put Diogo on a course of anti inflammatory painkillers. And another two weeks of light duties while on the medication. If that doesn’t work an expensive x-ray is needed on the leg, followed by who knows what.

I will give Diogo his dues he handles three legs better than Bud ever did. Going for a pee he literally does a handstand on his front two legs if he needs to go on the side of the bad leg.

This morning he wasn’t doing that and was able to stand on the leg while peeing. So the meds seem to have started making a difference.

It’s a dark dark moon

It’s been a rough couple of days as we work through the grieving process. Nico for such a small dog has left such an enormous hole behind.

But even while grieving and having much needed emotional support cuddles with the rest of the little monsters, I have bought another game.

The majority of my game purchases these days are ones of opportunity.

I belong to a UK board gaming facebook group that not only chats about games but also allows the selling and buying of games.

It has been known that on a daily basis for members of the group to post collections or games they no longer have room for or want for sale to those of us who don’t have enough games.

It’s these listings that I usually buy from these days, especially if it’s a game I’ve been after for a while.

One such purchase of opportunity from this group has been another copy of Dark Moon.

Dark Moon started life as a streamlined, dice version of Battlestar Galactica. Naturally being an ip licensed to FFG it was never going to see the light of day with that theme. Not unless FFG picked up the game. Which they didn’t. So it got released as Dark Moon by Stronghold.

Stronghold did release an expansion for the game that I never bought at the time. Then over the years the game and expansion fell out of print. Which made it harder to find a copy of the expansion when I remembered to look for it.

Which brings me to this purchase.

The seller was not only selling the core game but also the expansion. They couldn’t be separated because they were in one box. However at the price being asked I didn’t mind. Getting the expansion separately would easily cost me the asking price if not more on eBay (if it was available).

So I snapped it up.

This sort of opportunity was how I ended up with Discworld Ankh-Morpork.

Obviously I do pre-order stuff (mainly expansions these days) or buy stuff I come across via reviews. But those later ones I also count as purchases of opportunity because they were unplanned.

I’m hoping this sort of serendipity will eventually get me the Fallout expansion New California (at a reasonable price).

But it’s cold and wet outside

With Storm Claudia battering the country I woke to rain. Not a problem for me. However for two of the little monsters this is the nightmare situation.

Letting them out to answer the call of nature means them being hesitant crossing the threshold between inside and dry, and outside and wet.

After a little encouragement they find the nearest spot to the back door that allows them to do their bodily functions before making a dash inside.

I was hoping for dry weather because I have to swap over my tires.

Last Friday on the way to club night I hit a pot hole. Didn’t realise until I was leaving at about 10pm that my tire was flat and the rim had been damaged. So in the car park I had to change tires and put on the spare.

I’ve been avoiding doing any long trips, because until today I’ve not had a spare tyre. Didn’t want to get caught out. But yesterday I was able to source a second hand rim/tyre for the car with next day delivery.

That tyre is due to be delivered today. Sadly the estimated time of delivery is right smack damn in the middle of club night. So no gaming today for me. There is no way mum could take in a tyre.

The lack of spare tyre is also why Dolly and I haven’t been out on any adventures this week. We are dying to get out into nature again.

Transfer News Latest

I’ve just had Diogo’s travel itinerary shared with me.

I’m flabbergasted.

Diogo starts his journey to the UK on the 17th, and arrives in the UK on the 21st! Four frekkin’ days. Poor little dude.

But his arrival is getting closer, as is my excitement.

RIP Ace Frehley

It’s taken a day or two for me to write this post.

Last Thursday, early Friday morning the news broke that Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and founding member of KISS passed away.

Like the passing of Diogo Jota earlier in the year, the news of his passing hit me pretty hard.

I’ve been a KISS fan since 1982 when I first heard them round my best friend Kevin’s house. The album he played to me was Love Gun.

KISS were my first gig (De Montfort Hall, Leicester 1983). Ace had left by then, KISS had taken the make up off, and Vinnie Vincent was on lead guitar. Eric Carr had his drum set on the tank turret that was a left over from the creatures tour.

It wasn’t until March 1988, a month after the passing of my grandad that I had what can only be described as a three day high! It started off attending a record signing by Ace at a record store in Kingston Upon Thames. I drove there with a friend that I was studying with at Brighton Poly.

This signing and the gig two days later were the first Ace had here in the UK playing as a solo artist since leaving KISS.

So after queuing for an age I finally got to briefly meet Ace and the rest of Frehleys Comets, and get his ep signed. My friend kindly got a copy signed for my brother.

After the signing I headed back east and home.

As I said two days later myself, my brother, my best friend Kevin, and our childhood partner in crime Ginette drove down to the Hammersmith Odeon to see Ace play live.

It was a magical three days, I was on a natural high. Not only had I met my hero. But I’d seen him play in his only UK gig.

Jump forward to 1996 at my local in Guildford they had a fancy dress party (I think for Halloween). I went as Ace from the Dressed to Kill album.

As the photo below shows with the wig I made a pretty good Ace.

It took me an age to put the make up on.

The lazy part was I could get away with wearing a suit, and didn’t have to try and recreate one of Ace’s stage outfits.

There is another photo (full length) but I’ve been unable to locate it.

In 1996 I went by myself to see KISS headline Donington as part of the reunion tour. At the time it was the only UK reunion tour, but they announced further UK dates at the concert.

I was front and centre for this one. There was no way I was going to move from my spot. If I needed to answer the call of nature I was more than prepared to pee my pants. Luckily I didn’t need to go. Somehow my bladder held out for an incredibly long time.

This was a dream come true. The original KISS lineup in full makeup. And I was front row for it.

I then saw them with Kate at Wembley full makeup up, I think that was the Psycho Circus tour. And that was without Peter on the drums.

I feel lucky that I got to see the original line up in make up. Plus see and meet Ace as a solo artist.

Ace was my favourite member of KISS. A hero of mine.

Ace bought so much joy to my life. Gave me probably one of my most memorable life moments. Yes meeting him in 1988 was that impactful.

I hope his friends and family are finding some comfort from the outpouring of love from fans.

RIP Space Ace.

Stop the world I want to get off

Mention the word vertigo and I instantly think of the Hitchcock classic.

However since Sunday morning I’ve been reminded it’s a medical thing too.

Being woken up by Dolly to go out at 6am on Sunday is not the ideal time to find out that all of a sudden the world has turned into a 1960s Batman set.

Returning to bed was a relief and I tried to sleep off the feeling of nausea I’d gotten from standing up too long.

Later in the morning I dumped the little monsters on mum. They needed letting out regularly and that was going to be an issue for me in my current state. In the end they stayed the night with mum.

But during the day and night I was lying as still as possible with my eyes closed. Often drifting in and out of sleep.

A risky trip to the doctors (mind you all trips to the doctors unwell are potentially risky for a single person) yesterday got me an exercise to do plus some tablets to stop the nausea.

Although all three missed me. Dolly apparently didn’t settle. So she has been back with me. Dolly needs less visits outside than the Nico and Loki.

The nausea has stopped thanks to the pills.

Nursing daddy

However the world is still spinning when I move my head, and I still walk like a drunk. So stating the obvious I’m not safe to drive. Let alone spend the day on my feet working.

So that’s where I am lying on my back, moving as little as possible, doing the exercise I have been given.

ZX Spectrum Next – my next geek out?

One project I recently backed on Kickstarter and about to finish and go into production is for the ZX Spectrum Next version 3.

I’ve been aware of the ZX Spectrum Next since its original crowdfunding a few years back. But I resisted backing that and the subsequent follow up campaign. The cost put me off if I remember correctly.

So what changed with this new edition to tempt me to part with my money?

When I saw that this version will also have the ability to be a Commodore 64 I was tempted. After all I had a C64 before I had a Speccy. For the record I loved both, and I think this was the start of my gaming philosophy of playing a game on the platform that had the best version.

However what got me to press that back project button was a third computer that it could also run as. That third machine was the Sinclair QL. The QL was a dream machine for me that I’d never own. It really was an object of desire for me.

And the thing about the ZX Spectrum Next is this is not some Raspberry Pi running emulators in a pretty case. It’s doing all this in hardware! Plus it upgrades the graphics, sound, can use sd cards, tape, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc.

Not only that as a programmer it comes with NextBASIC (I’m assuming I can also tinker with Sinclair BASIC if I so desire), full C support, Assembly, and complete IDEs and toolchains. So I can write my own stuff for it.

With every system shipped, a SD card is included packed with games, apps, demos, documentation, and development tools to get started right out of the box.” (from the kickstarter page)

I’m looking forward to tinkering with Z80 assembly on it. Back in the day I was a BASIC and 6502 assembly guy. Then it was BASIC/C/Modula 2/68000 when I made the jump to 16bit on the Atari ST.

To help me with my Z80 journey I found out that a company has reprinted Spectrum Machine Language for the Absolute Beginner that was originally printed by Melbourne House publishing (I had the C64 version). To go along with that I also got Programming the Z-80 by Rodnay Zaks. Back in the day the go to authors for assembly programming were Zaks and/or Lance Leventhal. I had Lance’s 6502 and 68000 books. I had one by Zaks as well but I can’t remember for which processor.

I also backed and received a copy of Hewson’s Helpline for the ZX Spectrum, ZX80 & ZX81 a few months back. This is basically a collection of his columns from Sinclair User. These are fairly technical articles answering readers questions with snippets of code in BASIC and assembly.

I’ve also ordered a copy of 40 Best Machine Code Routines for the ZX Spectrum by Hewson as well.

So armed with these books I’m hoping to write my first ever Z80 assembly programs for the Speccy. There’s just something about writing assembler that higher languages don’t give you. I’m kinda excited about that prospect.

Finally before I finish this post I should say there were two versions of this Next, classic black and magenta. I went for the magenta.

I’m sure there will be more on this subject once the project delivers later in the year.

Little Monsters Update

This is kinda a still alive post but focused more on those four legged little monsters that I live with.

First up I’ve been sent a new photo (see below) of our latest recruit from Peru, Diogo. Yes I know in the post announcing his recruitment he was called Durin. However I decided to rename him in tribute to Diogo Jota who died tragically along with his brother in a car crash at the start of July.

I’m a Liverpool supporter. Have been since the age of 7. OMG it’s just clicked that’s 50 years now.

The parting of our Forever 20 hit me harder than I thought. I think the only other two times the death of someone I never knew but they still meant something to me hit me hard was Steve Jobs and Elvis.

I remember being told at work by a friend of Jota’s passing. I was date coding yoghurts when he came up to me and asked “had I seen the news about Jota?” I was expecting him to tell me Liverpool had accepted an offer for him. Instead he told me he had died in a car accident. I really did find it hard to continue our conversation, it felt like I’d start crying any second. There was definitely emotion in my voice as I spoke. To say I continued the rest of my shift in a bit of a daze was an understatement. My fellow Liverpool supporters at work couldn’t believe the news. We were in shock. It was hard to express what we were feeling, even to talk about it without breaking down in tears.

So it seemed natural that I’d want to do something to remember Diogo Jota. Hence the renaming of Durin to Diogo.

Diogo looks a little pissed to me in this photo

The other little monsters news is that Nico had a heart scan Tuesday and the heart murmur detected is actually two faulty valves. He has been prescribed a heart medication that he needs to take every 12 hours for the rest of his life.

The good thing is that he wasn’t experiencing any of the health issues that can be related to his heart problem. But if they do start they can be treated.

UPDATE: since writing this post this morning I’ve received another photo from Peru of Diogo and just had to share it here.

A very brief visit

On a gaming front the quick visit to see Nath was a blow out.

I took Vantage and Machi Koro 2 with me.

I think it’s best to describe Nath’s living arrangements as between homes at the moment. He is moved out of his previous place and waiting to move into his new place.

Which means currently he is stopping in a “granny” flat at his mother’s place.

This temporary accommodation doesn’t have a suitable table to play on. Space is at a premium and the very small table is being utilised for other things.

I even had to sleep on the floor. Something I’ve not done since the last couple of years of Striders life. Luckily I had my Swiss army blanket, and British Army artic sleeping bag. I used my woobie in its stuff sack as a pillow. So Dolly and I were comfortable. She ended up sleeping on the sleeping bag. But it was warm still during the night so I didn’t need it.

I did get to see Nath’s new home and help a little getting it ready. Well I put a bed side cabinet together for him.

Dolly really enjoyed her stay because she was able to just wander in and out as she wanted. And she really liked having access to what must be nearly an acre of lawn. I did notice Dolly doesn’t like gravel. She went around it whenever possible to avoid it. I kinda felt guilty that she doesn’t have this freedom or sized garden at home.

Yes our visit was way shorter than intended. But is was great to be with Nath again.

There is a plan that I see Nath very briefly when Diogo arrives. But that will be an overnight stay. The majority of that holiday will be helping Diogo settle in to his new forever home.

Now I have a couple of days before returning to work.

Praying for snow

I believe the Met Office calls the current hot weather our third heatwave of the year so far. But it feels like one big long heatwave, with the odd day or two of respite.

Yes on those cooler days I’ve managed to get Dolly out for a walk. But not on the longer more scenic walks. Those more tolerable summer days have fallen on days that I had to work.

I’ve also not got over the con crud I picked up from the UKGE. Even after getting a course of antibiotics from the doctors. Yes it had got that bad.

Vantage the latest game by Stonemaier Games was launched for sale on their website last Wednesday. And yes I did order a copy along with the upgraded components and player mats. Oh plus the Vantage Rolling Realms promo pack.

I’m expecting Vantage to arrive tail end of next week. So it will be after my visit to Nath next week.

Yep after tomorrow’s shift I’m on holiday for a week and a half.

What has arrived in time is Railroad Tiles (with a damaged box).

Wave three of Halo Flashpoint with the Banished is arriving Monday. Closely followed by my Enlightened Equipment Revelation Apex custom sleeping quilt on Tuesday.

So next week is looking like a big week on the arrivals front.

Going back to my visit to Nath I have not decided what games I’m taking with me yet. I’m taking his house warming present which is a copy of The Witcher board game. But other than that I’ve not made my mind up.

I do know I’ll be taking my walking stuff so we can have (heatwave permitting) a chill walk with a coffee stop.

That’s it for now, laters.
