Toe to toe in Star Realms

Yesterday as part of his great series of YouTube videos on his favourite game mechanics, my favourite game designer Jamey Stegmaier did a video on Star Realms. Which I’ve embedded below for your viewing delight.

There is so much I enjoy about Star Realms. It’s definitely a game that gives you moments to remember, “that time I came back from 1 authority when Freddy had over 60, and won” or “that perfect game against Scott” (recent video evidence was put up to support this) or “that time I did over 50 damage”. You get the idea.

Mechanics wise not mentioned by Jamey I love the gambit, hero and event cards. With the right combo of cards between gambits and events as the first player it’s possible to have an insane first turn buying an 8 cost card in the trade row. The gambits give you that feeling of uniqueness almost, a special ability/bonus you can use during your turn at any point in the game. But events, they appear in the trade row, and when they do have to be resolved right away. I love the randomness they give. They can swing a turn from average to amazing, change the game, the impact they have is awesome. Hero cards are like gambit cards really, except you have to buy them from the trade row. That’s over simplified them. But Heroes and Gambits add a dimension of decision making that is very nice, when to play the card.

Here is a video I’ve just put up of a game that finished last night between Scott (of Scott Plays) and myself that I think shows how enjoyable the game is. It really was a fun game. We were trading blows like giants standing toe to toe taking it in turns to hit each other.

One word of warning Jamey 30 plus authority is not safe in this game. It’s very easy to hit an opponent for 30 or more damage in a turn. I’ve definitely hit with damage in the forties. Possibly, my memory is failing me here I’ve hit in the low fifties too. I’ve been on the receiving end of these massive hits too.

I’d be interested in seeing what Jamey thinks of Epic, and Hero Realms.

Star Realms: Shock and awe – another nearly perfect game aka how I passed luck off as skill

As you may have guessed after the previous game I followed it up with an even better game. This hardly ever happens, usually I manage to grab defeat from victory. But as this Facebook message from Scott shows after one turn, the cards aligned for me.

So here is this miracle game…

All Signed Up

I wasn’t going to do it, I really wasn’t. But after trolling publishers like White Wizard Games about the US focus of events like their 2 upcoming European Legendary Series events plus an Epic Worlds Qualifying event.

It would have been a tad hypocritical of me not to take part in one of those events that are being held in the UK. Specifically they are being held at this years UKGE

The winners of the Legendary Series events will get immortalised on a card within Star Realms or Hero Realms depending on the event they win.

So I’ve signed up for the grand entry fee of £7 to the Star Realms event to see if against the odds I can join the ranks of the games elite players with my image in the game. But let’s face it the odds are going to be very remote. Luckily it’s the taking part and playing that I enjoy and not just the winning. See the mantra of the first losers club, of which I’m an honorary member.

Star Realms Scott’s Revenge

Continuing my recent series of boring Star Realms games, this one has Scott returning to form and annihilate me.

If that didn’t put you off the game the latest update adds another expansion. I’m not too bothered with the campaign side, I don’t play it. But the extra cards I’ll gladly take.

WWG added in-app tournaments which is going to be interesting to see how this develops, and what sort of costs are involved.

The initial tournament is 20 units of the in game currency an attempt, which is approximately 25 cents if my calculations are correct.

Looking at the prices below depending on the cost of other events I’m reasonably happy with the charges being made to buy the in game currency.

Considering I have won one game and got a reward of 3 credits, the temptation to keep playing to get those foils is tempting. It helps that the cost to enter is low. But is that because WWG want to draw people in to get them used to paying to play? If WWG keep the prices low, then I can see this taking off. But if they get the pricing wrong, and try to milk the players I won’t be using this.

Scott Schools me in Star Realms

In an ever escalating war of friendly banter I just put up the last 2 games of Star Realms Scott and I played. Sadly the Star Realms app didn’t have the game available that started this off from the start of the week. So no seeing me get my butt handed to me by Scott. But don’t worry I’m sure there will be an opportunity for me to put one of those games up soon enough. After all our stats against each other show that Scott is the better player.
