Flood of News

Just some pre-Gen Con, and I’m assuming press day news that has caught my eye.

New Angeles is the latest addition to the Android universe.

This plays four to six players in apparently 2-4 hours.

It’s taking a different approach in this game where you are playing as the corps in the Android Universe.

I’m not sure about getting this game, mainly due to the minimum number of players, and then if I do manage to find that many to play, the duration is long.

It will be interesting to see how this fits in with the story arc currently going on in the Android Universe. For instance the game Mainframe takes place in the 23 seconds that the largest bank in the Android universe goes dark, which the Flashpoint Cycle in Netrunner is exploring.

FFG announcement here
Asmodee announced today the unexpected first expansion for 7 Wonders Duel, the Pantheon expansion. The Gods are coming to Duel!

I wasn’t expecting this. Nath and I both love this game. So you can be sure I will be buying this when it comes out.

Not sure it needed an expansion, but more variety is always welcome.

New Game of Thrones game! Shocker not happy with announcing one new Game of Thrones based game already (based on Cosmic Encounter for 3-5 players). FFG now present us with The Hand of the King.

A card game using lovely cartoon art work, it almost makes you think there was a cartoon of the books.

I can see myself getting this to play with Nath. I hope it is a good two player experience.

Carcassonne Star Wars gets an expansion!

I believe this adds another player, more tiles (for that player I assume) and weapons!

If you can read German you can get more info here

That’s it for now. I’m sure there will be more stuff breaking over the next day or so.

Out Next Week WS1Aug16

I've not done one of these for a few weeks, mainly because there has been very little out that has been of interest or grabbed my attention. As I said in a previous post it's the lull before the GenCon Storm that is next week.

With FFG announcing the app crippled second edition of Mansions of Madness at the end of last week, I was surprised to see that it's hitting the shelves of your FLGS next week. I'm glad I'm not intending to buy this albatross because it's going to set you back £93. So for a hundred quid you can get the game, a kebab and a can of pop!

FFG with the second item to catch my eye this week, and one I'm more likely to buy. Well ok I will buy, because I can use them to play with Nath. Oh what is it? They are releasing the two 2015 World Championship decks that the 2015 World Champion used. I'm going to treat these like Magic duel decks.

Finally one of the hottest games of the year will hit the shelves, having only just reached its Kickstarter backers, and that's Scythe from Stonemaier Games. The Collectors edition of this is going for around £100 at the moment with its pimped out components. So £60 isn't looking too bad. Compare it with that app crippled monstrosity Mansions of Madness, and it looks a bargain. Although I want Cry Havoc more, this is a close second.

Well that's the stuff that has caught my eye from the Asmodee Borg Collective controlled Esdevium. Don't forget 12% of these prices is due to Brexit. What's caught your eye for next week?

Start selling your organs

Next week sees Gen Con taking place. Where publishers will be vying for the publics attention with over priced stands, and sneak peaks at games about to be released, along with the obligatory big news announcements to try and grab the attention of those unable to attend.

However FFG are getting a jump start on the competition and their sister companies in the Asmodee collective by releasing what seems like almost daily or every other day news announcements about their upcoming roster of games and expansions.

Today FFG have decided that they haven’t got enough of our money and they want you to be selling organs as well.

They are going to be turning you into gaming junkies with their new collectable dice game Star Wars Destiny.

At first reading I instantly thought Star Wars dice masters. But after skim reading the article it also has a card/deck building element. So must go watch the videos etc later after I’ve done some gaming this evening.

The game hits your FLGS or “dealer” as they now be known in November.

Here is the official announcement

Resistance is futile

It’s being reported today by the industry news website ICv2 that the Asmodee Borg is assimilating its latest victim. Which this time is F2Z Entertainment. So that’s PlaidHat and their stable of games e.g. Ashes, Mice and Mystics and Dead of Winter; and Z-Man games.

I did the above for when they assimilated Catan. But it still nicely represents how it seems Asmodee are operating with this latest acquisition.

I think the Borg look will suit Isaac and Coby at PlaidHat. Isacus and Cobus of Borg anyone?

Who knows how this will shake out, and just what the long term impact of this news will be. Personally I’m not a fan of these big all encompassing companies. And our Asmodee Borg masters have shown they are not above throwing around their power to dictate terms to shops, and trying to artificially control prices of their products.

I’m sure there are “economic” reasons for why they are assimilating other companies. It sure beats developing new IP, just buy other people’s!

But it will be interesting to see what happens. I can’t wait for the next PlaidHat podcast and see how honest they are about all this.

Yet another award for…

So today saw the announcement of the Spiel des Jahres and Kennerspiel des Jahres winners.

The winner of the Spiel des Jahres was the super popular game Codenames. Whilst the winner of the Kennerspiel des Jahres was Isle of Skye.

So I’m betting you are just dying to know what a middle aged, rotund, balding man thinks of the results.

So fitting that demographic perfectly let me tell you.

I think Codenames is a good winner. I’ve heard Tom Vassel throw around the figure of over 400,000 copies sold already. So it’s a very popular winner. But is the game any good? I think so, as does the majority of the Fenland Gamers. We enjoy playing it. One or two have bought their own copies. I have to say I think I’d be happier if Imhotep had won. For me it’s a better game.

Considering the games Isle of Skye was up against this is the biggest surprise. For me Pandemic Legacy is a better game. I can’t say if Time Stories is, because it hasn’t hit my table yet. But if I had to put money on it, I’d be betting that Isle of Skye is the weakest of the three games.

Unusually for me, this year I’ve played four out of the six games in the two awards. I do think it’s a very strong selection of games. My feelings about Isle of Skye will be backed up when it’s award will die of loneliness, whilst Pandemic Lagacy will be building an extension to house all of its. And the only game(s) that will match it for awards collected will be Codenames and Time Stories.

All Change – Again!

Last week seemed the week that FFG and PlaidHat decided they would release errata to their LCG/miniature games.

First up PlaidHat have released an errata for one of the cards from Ashes. Not much of an inconvience for me as I'm not deckbuilding yet (although I need to start pdq). But what I like about this announcement is that although people are going to have to print out the correction, and use sleeves, PlaidHat are looking at ways to make replacement cards available. My suggestion would be to make the updated card available from Drive Thru Cards, it takes the production costs away from PlaidHat. I wish FFG would use something like this, or make the errata'd cards they announce available to buy somehow.

Above: original card on left, errata version middle & right, right OP kit alt art errata version

Naturally the errata'd version of Enhanted Violinist will be the only version allows at the OP event I'm organising in a months time.

PlaidHat have also released “improved” draft rules for Ashes too. I've not played the game in draft format, but they do seem better than the ones in the included rule book.

Oh oh oh, just thought please please PlaidHat could we have another alt art Enchanted Violinist but this time using Lindsey Stirling as the art? It would be soooo uber cool if you did that.

Right FFG have released a LOT of errata and updates. For me this means I have to look at the Imperial Assault (IA) and Netrunner ones. I've not looked at the changes for IA, but would expect to see new tournament legal skirmish maps to include the wave 6 skirmish maps. Plus more cards being “tweaked” so they are not breaking the game any more.

The one I have looked at naturally is the Netrunner updates. I play anarch and NBN and it seems these updates are specifically aimed at nerfing them. On the most wanted list, Faust and David have been added along with Wyldside. Which hits my Noise deck big time. I've got some decisions to make now if I want to keep playing them. I'd just been looking at Mumba Temple for my NEH deck, but hey guess what is now on the list? Things are even tighter on my NEH deck, not sure I can get rid of anything to give me the two influence I'd need. Plus Breaking News has been added to the list. And that really screws me. I may have to review the use of this agenda. But what to replace it with?

Plus we have errata for some cards, these don't hit me, well I'm pretty sure they don't. But the fast advance NEH has had the breaks put on it with the Astroscript Pilot Program being limited to one per deck now.

I do like this approach by FFG and PlaidHat, I wouldn't like a card to be banned. At least this way I can still play the cards. It's just I have to make decisions about how much I really want to play them, and how I can fit them in, whilst working out what has to go to make way for them.

New Toys for WS11Jul16

So despite deciding to make our pockets a little bit lighter by raising prices, Esdevium has actually decided to share with the U.K. a couple of interesting things next week.

First up, and I’m excited about this, is the first data pack in the next cycle Flashpoint for Netrunner, 23 Seconds.

Very quickly out I think considering that the “core” game came out last month, are these additions to the Tanks skirmish game.

So after a few weeks of dumping stuff on the market I have no interest in, we have the above expansions.

Consider this the quiet before the storm. Origins has just finished, with some releases happening there. But the big flood is still to happen. A lot of publishers have been holding off for GenCon.

GenCon hits at the start of August, with all the stuff released there hitting your wallets soon after!

Time to start saving!

New Star Realms App Expansion Crisis Heroes Now Available

You may notice something different about which expansions to play with when challenging other players now.

It is now possible to buy the latest in app expansion based on an already available physical expansion, which is Crisis Heroes.

I’ve not played Star Realms with the Hero cards, so it will be interesting to see how these play. Will they give incredible insane starts like the Gambits/Events can give?

Continuing with the “pay once play anywhere” approach this is a snip at £1.49.

Esdevium hiking prices due to Brexit

So what effect has Brexit had on us gamers in the UK?

Well as this Yahoo Finance chart of the pound against the dollar shows the pound took what at best could be described as a dive.

So stuff being bought from the US via the likes of Kickstarter is going to cost more. Which for me means that the Hero Realms Kickstarter is costing me more than it was just over a week ago when it finishes later in the month.

Now you thought the oil companies were quick to put prices up when the cost of a barrel changed. They could learn a thing or two from Esdevium.

Q

Who very quickly seeing the impact Brexit had on the pound decided that they would need to increase the the price of the games they distribute to compensate. This will be the second price hike we have seen this year from Esdevium I believe.

Now my question is will Esdevium reduce the prices by the same amount if the pound recovers to pre-Brexit prices, just as quickly? Or even by more if it some how becomes even stronger?

Have they jumped the gun, and re-acted too early?

Would we be seeing these price rises if we actually had competition on the distribution of games in the UK?

We already feel that in the UK companies price gouge us on goods. Whether the evidence, economic argument supports this is another question. But when we see games costing a lot less in the US, it’s hard not to think we are subsidising that market with our higher prices.

So this new price hike does seem to be like rubbing salt into an already open wound, despite there being a legitimate financial argument for it to happen. As I have already asked, the only way for this not to be perceived as taking advantage of a situation to increase prices is that when the point recovers we see an similar drop in the price of games too.

Some OP News

Finally after much nagging and a Twitter conversation I managed to get to the bottom of how my FLGS can get their hands on organised play kits for Epic and Star Realms from the distributor Esdevium. So hopefully we will be seeing some organised play for them real soon.

The observant will notice a new menu option that takes you to the details about the Ashes OP that I'm organising that is being held at my FLGS. The page has the OP details and a link to the official Plaid Hat event page.

On other news bgg have an Origins clip showing an early look at the amazing looking Tokaido app that is coming out Eisen time iirc. I'm definitely going to get that when it comes out.
