Some Inspiration For The BPC AGM Part 1

This year the Backpackers Club AGM is being held in the South West at the Bath Racecourse from the Friday (23rd April) to the Sunday (25th April).

Apparently (and I haven’t dug out the maps to check this out yet) the racecourse is near or next to the Cotswold Way. But this got me thinking if folks are thinking of coming along, and I hope that they are that maybe they may want a few more suggestions as to what is available in the area for them to do.

Well there is the obvious of nipping into Bath itself and doing the tourist thing there. But as luck would have it The Guardian website have had a couple of bits up that may be of interest.

The first is something for you to listen to “Top National Trust walk in Bath: ‘Six mile ramble through wooded hills and valleys’” (you can get the downloadable map from the NT here). Which they have also written about on the Guardian site as well with a very nice picture of Bath on it. You can read the article here.

What I will do over the coming weeks in the run up to the AGM is dig up more ideas/suggestions for what to do while at the AGM that weekend.

Is It First Tuesday Time Again Already?

It’s that time of month again when the Northumberland Backpackers meet up in the pub to chew the fat, down a drink or two and generally have a good time.

So if you are interested in coming along it’s at the usual place (details below) and it’s TONIGHT.

It is held at The Bridge Hotel in Newcastle. Things kick off from around 7:45pm. You don’t have to be a member to come along, it’s a great way to find out what the club is all about and chat to like minded folks. Let’s face it the missus or even hubby may not always share our passion for the outdoors, and may find our conversation a little bit boring.

Anyway if you can make it pop along.

This Tuesday Is The First Tuesday Of The Month

Don’t forget this Tuesday is the first Tuesday of the month. Which means for those that live in range of Newcastle and are into backpacking or want to get into backpacking, the local chapter (let’s try and make them sound like a biker gang so they sound cool and rebellious) of the Backpackers Club have their monthly pub meet up.

Basically this is a gentle reminder to keep your diary open that night and pop along and meet like minded folks.

I’ll put up the details in full on Tuesday, but basically they are the same as last month and the month before that. So if you can’t wait for me to republish the specifics just go back and look at my entry for last month.

This morning I received this little email reminder from Baz about the next London Backpackers Meet Up.

Just back from trekking in the Picos de Europa and (I dont know how I got talked into this) but also walking some of the Asturias coast path!

I’ll be posting details my blog as soon as I get the time. What I will state is that the area is brilliant for backpacking; like Wales with better weather, bigger mountains and no biting insects!

The pub meet will be held at the usual location – the Founders Arms from 18.30 on Thursday 30th July. Let me know if you can make it so I can keep an eye out for you.

Hot off the presses comes this email I just received from Baz. All the details you need are below, so if you can make it pop along, say hi and meet like minded folks who’ll discuss gear and backpacking until they are thrown out of the pub.

Hi All,
Seems everyone is clamouring to enjoy the balmy summer evenings, so I’ve decided on an albeit short notice meet this Wednesday. For convenience the venue remains unchanged; the Founders Arms, Bankside with Kick off at 18.30.
Please reply by email if you are thinking of coming along, so that I can look out for you, the pub is busy.
I look forward to seeing you there.

Reminder Backpacker club – London Ramble This Saturday

Kick off is 10am from Richmond station. Meet in the ticket hall, that’s up the stairs from the platforms.
Rough plan is to pick up the Thames path and follow this to Petesham Meadows and then on to the Capital ring for a climb up to Pembroke lodge with is fine views of the Thames valley and back into the big smoke :) From there we’ll drop down to Ham gate and across the common to the river. And on towards Kingston. There’s a bus back to Richmond that can be caught if needs be. There are cafes, pubs on route for drinks, ect.
From Kingston there’s the option to re-enter the park and follow the Tamsin Trail back to the Lodge and rejoin the Capital Ring back into Richmond. Total circuit mileage is approx 12 to 14 miles, with the short haul up to the Lodge the only real elevation.
Parking in Richmond is a nightmare, I’d suggest heading to St Margarets an parking at the bottom of St Margarets Drvie. Be aware that the road that’s parallel to the Thames floods. From the drive head over Richmond Lock and follow the signs to the station. We’ll be leaving car there so anyone else doing the same please text me and we can hook up. It takes about 15mins to walk to Richmond from here.
See you Saturday morning – you can reach me before hand on the following email address bazza_carter@yahoo.com.

BPC: London Group – One For The Diary

I’ve had an email sent to me letting me know about a little Backpackers meet being held at the end of the month.

BP club London ramble. As mentioned in previous despatches the London ramble will be held on Saturday 27th June. Consensus is for a wander down the  Thames Path starting from Richmond with a side bar into Richmond Park. This a social event open to members and non members alike, and suitable for kids. Opportunities for geo caching along the route if the wee ones need motivating.”

So live in the London area (bad luck) and fancy a walk and chance to meet like minded folks into backpacking and the outdoors, or thinking about trying backpacking and want to pick up some tips or advice. Well get along to this meet.

You can contact Baz via his blog for further details and letting him know you are going.
