Review: A Lonely Place To Die

A little while back I told you about in a jokey way a movie called A Lonely Place To Die.

The film is now out on DVD, so is it the cutscenes from the TGO Challenge DVD or does it stand up on its own rights?

I’m not going to go into the plot too much as I don’t want to spoil it for those that do after reading this who want to watch it.

The premise of the movie is a group of five mountaineers on vacation in the remote Scottish Highlands doing outdoorsy stuff like climbing, discover a young girl buried in an underground chamber with only an air-pipe to the surface keeping her alive. Not long after this discovery things start to hit the fan.

A Lonely Place To Die is pitched as a British Thriller. So does it thrill and keep you on the edge of your seat, or is it more pedestrian? I have to say it’s not that suspenseful or thrilling. It does little to build up tension or surprise, in fact it’s pretty predictable. If this is as the sleeve claims one of the best British thrillers, then our film industry is in far worse shape than I thought.

Despite the rather attractive Melissa George being in the movie, for me the stunning Scottish Highlands manage to steal the first 30 odd minutes of the movie.

The opening climbing sequence is of particular note, and with my limited climbing experience, looked authentic enough.

Having said the above the movie is watchable, and better then most of the crap on UK tv. Worth buying? No. Worth renting? Just about.
