So what do people think, do you prefer the before or the after and can you tell which is which? Leave a comment letting me know what you think.

Some of the processed photos have been tilted shifted, or a filter of some sort applied. The thing they all have in common is the fact they were taken on the iPhone and then processed using apps on the iPhone. Some of those apps I have written about already. But I have added a couple more to the tool chest lately as well.

I guess what I’m trying to illustrate is the fact you can produce pleasing photos to the eye in the palm of your hand these days.

On my first TGO Challenge I used the three mega pixel camera that was built into the phone I had with me. Now I wasn’t happy with the results that I got with that. I definitely couldn’t do any of the processing on the photo that I can do now. That is despite the phone being a ‘smart phone’ and capable of running apps. It just didn’t have the apps available.Plus the screen was not even comparable to the iPhones.

So why would I want to be able to do all this sort of stuff in the palm of my hand?

Add to the equation that I can compose blog posts as well, and you see that I now have a pocket blogging machine in the form of my phone. I’ll write a longer post about blogging on the trail/hill soon. In short it means that at the end of the day sitting safely in my tent/tarp, or in a bothy I can compose a post, add some photos and when there is a signal post them to the blog.

As you all know I do like to live blog (when tech failures don’t get in the way), however successfully or not you think I have done it. This setup allows me to do that.

But even if I wasn’t live blogging on a walk, and I was on holiday it enables me to take photos, make some quick edits, find a wifi hotspot and update maybe Facebook, or Flickr while having a coffee and pastry. Yes I do like to pretend I’m one of those trendy geeky types from time to time. There is even an iPhone app that can take the photo and turn it in to a virtual postcard for you to post on Facebook or email friends and family.

I know there is the whole argument about getting away from it all. Funny really as you don’t need to check those emails, or answer those calls while using the phone to write a blog post, or take that photo. Not even when you post that blog entry to your blog, no need to be hassled by those other distractions. They can wait until you get back to the rat race. But that requires discipline and self control, words that we seem to forget in this day and age. Yes the temptation is there to check those other things. But don’t, be strong, ignore them and give your full attention to enjoying yourself and recording in whatever means you like those memories.

However that blog post, or Facebook status update can act as a nice little ‘hey I’m fine and having a good time’ message to your friends and family. It may not say that, but that is what it is telling them.

Plus if I write my blog post on my phone, is it really any different from those that keep a hand written journal as they go along? For me not really the only difference for me is the media being used to record those thoughts.

So plenty to mull over there. This post has certainly gone in a different direction than I thought it would. But that is how my mind goes sometimes. I start off in one place and end up in some unplanned destination. I look forward to reading the comments to this post, they will be interesting I think.

  4. Me too, I prefer the softer effect but love looking at all of them – they take me on ‘walks’ while sitting in my cosy chair.
