An Outdoors Blog – kinda

A Quick Survey

Posted on | November 7, 2009 | 4 Comments

I’m hoping that readers of this blog will kindly fill in this quick survey for me. It’s kind of to allow me to find out if folks are using the stuff I’ve added to the blog to enable them to share with others. But also to allow me to play with using Google Docs and forms to do a survey and embed it in a blog.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

    Darren,
I confess to not being into twitter or facebook much at all. I tried facebook for a while but found most of the stuff I could relate could be done by e-mail anyway, so why post it for the world. I’m totally hooked to Google Reader for RSS, though, which is how I keep track of all the blogs.

Baz, where would we be without Google Reader? I love it. Do you use any of the social stuff that Google Reader allows you to do?

I have to say I haven’t used that aspect, but will check it out when I next get chance. The main thing about Google reader for me is keeping track of my RSS feeds wherever I am – corporate LAN, home, parents, etc. There is always something to read wherever you are as long as you are connected.

Posting this comment on behalf of Baz, I have now hopefully switched off the proxy block (will have to see how that goes with the spam)

    Darren,

I’m behind a proxy and rather wisely you have a setting to avoid comments incoming from such places!

My follow-up would be along the lines of:

Just to follow up my comment – which was hastily bashed out as my 4 week old daughter kicked off and needed attention – this is an interesting point of discussion, I feel.

To me, facebook and twitter don’t feel like they give me ‘freedom’. I understand the strengths of web 2.0 and the idea of inputting and growing content in a manner totally different to more static web content, but it seems to come at the price of my free time, with people hooked on it and actually seemingly missing out if they aren’t on line to pick up on it. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s how it feels.

Some time ago the company I (still – just about) work for had a contract with another company based in Bristol, and they were owned by AOL. The project we worked on was one of the first giving ‘free’ e-mail to people: no sign up fee, and a percentage of the dial-up cost went to pay for it. It really worked very well, but the mother company decided it wasn’t making quite enough profit etc etc and it was closed down. In fact the company in Bristol was closed down. As then fairly new IT and Internet engineers, we were saddened by the loss of these guys’ jobs in the light of the sheer breadth of their careers – one of the guys used to write modem driver code and post it out on a floppy to customers individually! But even this chap was pragmatic about his future – when you’ve spent 20 years completely staying on top of IT and keeping in there and excited by every new thing, and being able to build and understand it…well, you wear out.

Where am I going with this? I now don’t think it is unreasonable to get to a point where one starts to avoid or tire new technology, and right now I think twitter feels a bit like that to me.

Despite the work proxy I am still able to rather handily use my google mail :o )

    Regards
