3 Minute Noodles

One of my favourite snacky meals is 3 minute noodles, with frozen prawns, cockles and peas, with a good pinch of Piri Piri spice. It’s quick, easy, cheap and comforting.
Yep sounds like something you would have as an evening meal while backpacking. It nearly is, instead of the frozen ingredients I would replace them with dried ones instead, and/or a peperami (cut up).
Each time I make them I vary the ingredients for a bit of variety. I even finish it off with some chopped spring onions if I have any in the fridge at the time.
What I like about the 3 minute noodles is that they are cheap and flexible. You can literally throw anything in with them and have a really tasty meal.
Baz and myself have shown in video in the past it is possible to make your own version of a pot noodle. But it is possible to use the noodles to make a filling noodle soup as well. If you want inspiration for this visit a local noodle bar.
In fact they are an ideal food for backpacking. Whether they are used for a lunch or main meal. For starters they are light, cook quickly or can be cooked using a pot cozy. But either way it means you are not using a lot of fuel to get a meal. They can be also incredibly cheap. Forget the name brands, go for the value option. There is very little taste wise between them, and for the price of a branded pack you can get three or four packs of the value brand.
I know like marmite people either hate or love them. As you can tell I fall in to the love them camp. It doesn’t stop me from using a dehydrator to make meals to go backpacking with. What it does is give me options and variety in the food I can have while out. Heck the dehydrator can be used to dry out ingredients to add to the noodles later on.
So there you have it folks the humble pack of 3 minute noodles. A versatile ingredient that should be in any backpackers pantry.

What I generally eat on trips is really plain noodles (Morrisons sell them for about 9p) with dried porcini mushrooms for a bit of extra bulk and taste. Great choice and so flexible in terms of what you add to them

That takes me back
Buy the noodles and ditch the flavour packet – it’s nowt but sugar, salt and MSG – and try other options that are far tastier and a hell of alot more healthier. And not much more expensive.

Dave, exactly my point.
Baz, seems so long ago now. How time flies.

Try some of the 2-minute Maggi noodles in the ethnic food aisles of mainstream grocery stores – I’ve tried the curry and the masala ones. The curry will keep you toasty on a cold day…I like them for breakfast over those packages of gluey oatmeal. Plus you save a minute!

Julie, hi and thanks for the suggestion on the Maggi noodles. Noodles for breakfast interesting idea. Not much of a breakfast person myself.
