An Outdoors Blog – kinda

Tips And Handy Advice

Posted on | January 2, 2009 | 3 Comments

It’s been a busy day. Walking the dogs, and then an unplanned trip down to Cardiff to take Josh back to his student digs. He wanted to go back early so he can finish some essays for Monday. Don’t remember Dan being that studious.

So why am I telling you the above? What’s it got to do with the outdoors and this blog? Nothing really. Except that during the long drive the mind tends to wonder and I think about stuff. Some of that stuff is ideas for this blog.

One of the ones I had this trip was to start a "tips, handy advice" post that I will add a link to the side. But will allow folks to add any tips and advice they would like to share with fellow readers of this blog. I’ll start with these ones:

  • When using the Honey Stove, you may find it useful to pack some latex/plastic gloves to wear while assembling it. This way you won’t get dirty hands (it does send to get dirty from the smoke). Tesco sell a box of 10 for less than a couple of quid. Or next time you fill up at the petrol station, keep an eye out to see if they have any of those thin clear plastic ones on the side of the pumps, if you get what I mean ;-)
  • Now this may go over the head of the male readers, and you may want to speak to the wife/significant other about this. But some of the washing liquids for clothes come with a little plastic ball for measuring out the correct measure of liquid to use to clean your clothes, and also put in the washing machine (it’s a large usually white object in the kitchen). Those plastic balls are really handy. Especially if you take into account this bit of advice from BPL.co.uk for their Half Hex Floor "The pole base isn’t reinforced and so we strongly suggest using a motorcycle side stand plate (a hard plastic cup from any motor cycle dealer) to protect the floor, and prevent the pole from sinking during the night. " Yep instead of the stand plate use the plastic ball.
  • By wrapping a wick round the Whitebox Stove you can then use the wick to prime the Whitebox and light it easier. This is really handy for using the Whitebox in cold weather. (NOTE TO ME: I may do a video of this one for you).

Please leave any tips/advice in the comments of this post. I’ll be adding more as I think of them.

To improve the tear stength of plastic tarp ground sheets for pegging or tieing add some gaffer tape to the corners then punch in some holes, try it on an offcut. I used to just weigh down the ends until during the night I dislodged my gear and the wind blew the groundsheet under my legs, resulting in a very wet footbox.

If you want to measure specific amounts of meths to use with your meths stove, then you could use one of those little measuring caps that come with cough medicine, or from the chemist a syringe (without a needle, which you don’t need anyway) that has measurement markings.
