Review: BushBuddy Ultra
Price: $120.00 Cad if buying from UK.
Weight: 5.1 ounces
Size: 4 1/4″ diameter by 3 3/4″ high
There is nothing like an open fire when camping.
The BushBuddy Ultra is the lightweight version of the BushBuddy. These are both wood burning stoves. Which means that fuel is free, you just pick it up as you walk along.
Designed to fit in a Snow Peak 900, I find it easily fits inside my Snow Peak 1400, but too large to fit in a Vargo Ti-Lite/Alpkit Mytimug.
Holding the stove by it’s base when it is in full flame it is possible to lift and move around. This demonstrates just how cool the base is and that it does not scorch the ground it is standing on.
One thing you have to get used to is the fact that the pot you use with the Bushbuddy Ultra is going to get covered in soot. So you will need a storage bag to stop everything in your pack getting covered in soot.
If there is anything but a light wind, then you will need to use a windshield. This is also a stove that you would not use inside your tent to cook with, for obvious reasons.
The BushBuddy Ultra is a great stove, it’s a fun little stove.
LIKES: size, weight, cost of fuel, basically everything about it
DISLIKES: Hassle of importing
Above The BushBuddy Ultra in action
Below inside the BushBuddy Ultra, you can see how efficiently it has burnt the wood.
Above all that remains after I have soaked the ashes to make sure they are no longer hot.

Hi Darren, there is a write up on my latest blog about using a bushbuddy over the course of a week. Plastic bags and an old stuffsac are useful to have when using it.
[...] Food this evening was hot dogs. I’d promised my self them, and I delivered. I even had the mustard and ketchup packets to finish them off with, sadly no fried onions. I introduced Alan to the delights of Java Juice. I think Alan took a shine to the Bush Buddy Ultra. [...]
[...] in mist. So was the field we were in at one point. I decided to make a coffee, and then keep the Bush Buddy Ultra going so that if Alan woke up I could make a coffee for him as well. Alan woke up five minutes [...]
[...] suggested it fits in the Snow Peak 900, Bush Buddy Ultra perfectly. Very snug indeed, so no rattling around. This is a very very nice little compact set up [...]
[...] reviews that made it are the Bush Buddy Ultra, Aquagear, and the original Whitebox [...]
just wondered if you could say in your opinion pound for pound generally which stove to be the best
David, great question and I think the best way to answer is to write a post on it.
cheers darren , maybe you might want to consider a broad but all encompassing list of criteria so that we can see how you have made your judgements
