I agree 100%, wild camping should be free. i am also Scottish and been wild camping many times when i was a kid. i am now an adult and live in england, and feel very restricted because i cant do the same with my children without booking a pitch and it costing a fortune.!!!!!
P.S. the Scottish had to fight for thier freedom (watch "braveheart) LOL

[...] I’m not a British citizen or resident but if you are please consider signing this petition created by fellow blogger Darren Christie before May, 24th. Up to now 130 outdoor loving people did and if he can gather more than 200 until the closing date the petition will be passed to officials who work for the Prime Minister in Downing Street, or sent to the relevant Government department for a response. What this is all about? Well, in Darren’s own words: [...]

[...] Up here we’re spoiled and as a mountain leader I can plan multi-day routes in the hills knowing that at the end of the day, me and my party can settle down in a remote and isolated location, high up in the mountains, away from roads and habitation and not be bothered by the “law”. Why? This is wild camping and it’s within the law in Scotland. You can wild camp in Scotland for up to 3 nights in the one place but the usual moral code of conduct applies. Leave no trace. Down south though, it’s a different matter and over at Whitespider’s blog, there’s a petition to lobby the English government to legalise wild camping in England and Wales.
