TGOC Reading List

Posted on | November 21, 2007 | 9 Comments

This is more or less a guest post I suppose, as over on the TGOC forums Peter aka Mr Grumpy has kindly given me permission to reproduce his posting here. I would of linked to it, but unfortunately it is not possible to link to individual postings on the TGOC forums. And I thought it was such a useful posting and resource for people whether they are  doing the TGOC or doing any walking in Scotland, that I contacted Peter. So a big thank you for allowing me to post this, and a big thank you for doing such an excellent job.

So here now is Peter’s posting:

A couple of years ago I started a thread on this site with suggestions of books to read which may help with Challenge route planning, background information on the area of the Highlands through which Challengers pass and other aspects of walking in remote country. With a hundred or so new Challengers each year I thought that this information may again be useful. Feel free to ignore it if you already know it all! Also if you have other suggestions (books that is) please feel free to add them.

Nice to see “The Drove Roads of Scotland” listed. A good book on the history of the Highlands, and good for the imagination.

    The author wrote:
At an early stage in the research it became apparent that to construct a map on which were marked all the routes…would be unmanageable…through the multiplicity of routes…used by the drovers.
